Graying and Staying Initiative

Graying & Staying Initiative

The North Carolina Nurses Association recently concluded a research study to identify strategies to retain mature nurses. NCNA recognizes the rapidly aging nurse population and the severe need for hospitals to identify creative and effective strategies to make the best use of the skills and expertise of your seasoned nurses. The situation is dire and deserves your immediate attention.

NCNA’s Graying and Staying Initiative was funded by a grant from the Center for American Nurses and was conducted by Dennis Sherrod, EdD, MSN, RN of Winston-Salem State University and Susan Letvak, PhD, RN of the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

Please review the information on this page for more insight on the Graying and Staying Initiative.

If you are interested in conducting a survey of the mature nurses in your hospital, please email Tina Gordon, NCNA Chief Executive Officer or contact her at 800.626.2153. NCNA is willing to make our services available to your hospital so that you can receive results specific to your nursing population.

The Graying and Staying Initiative is just one example of the work that NCNA is doing to make North Carolina’s nursing workplaces the best in the country. We hope that you will be our partner in this effort.
