Beginning July 1, 2008, the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NC BON) will put in place their Continuing Competence: A Reflective Practice Approach for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in North Carolina.

So where do I go . . .
Knowing how nurses juggle many responsibilities, NCNA is providing a one-stop solution to assure that you will have the necessary documentation when your license renewal comes due beginning July 1, 2008. NCNA has partnered with JADE Learning, Inc. to offer a secure electronic portfolio for individual nurses. Fee for using the Continuing Competence Portfolio is $50.00 for a 2 year period. Any NCNA Member will be given the reduced rate of $25.00 for a 2 year period. Note: NCNA members should enter through the NCNA Member link (marked with ) in order to receive the reduced rate.

How will Continuing Competence work . . .

Although nurses will not be expected to complete their learning activity until their next license renewal (after July 1, 2008), they are expected to begin actively working on the following steps by July 1, 2006.
Assess their practice (using the four dimensions of nursing practice that are applicable in any practice setting).
Select standards of practice that apply to their area of practice (these may be nursing law, agency policies or standards set by professional or specialty organizations).
Collate feedback from others to help identify strengths and opportunities for further development.
Develop a learning plan which establishes at least one goal and gather materials related to their accomplishments.
Note: The self assessment and learning plan are for the individual nurse’s personal records and will not be part of what he/she will submit to the NC BON.

What will I place in my Continuing Competence Portfolio?

Since the Board will be asking you to complete one of eight requirements to prove your continuing competence, you have the ability to store in your electronic portfolio documentation of any one of those requirements. The following list is representative of the types of folders you might want to create for your personal portfolio.
Proof of national certification or re-certification
Documentation of completion of a NC Board of Nursing approved refresher course
Documentation of a minimum of two semester hours of post-licensure academic education related to nursing practice
Completed worksheets on reflective practice
  ° Professional responsibility
  ° Knowledge-based practice
  ° Legal/ethical practice
  ° Collaboration
Completed Learning Plan

Published nursing-related articles
