Nurses across the country are understandably upset with the tragic death of Alex Pretti. We can all empathize with colleagues, patients, and family who are mourning the loss of someone who has been described by coworkers as an “outstanding” nurse who had a “strong sense of duty.”

The cornerstone of nursing is advocacy for people at their most vulnerable, a trait Pretti was demonstrating Saturday morning. The Code of Ethics demands that nurses practice with integrity, compassion and respect for all human beings and it calls on all of us to advocate for patient safety, human dignity and protecting rights.
NCNA’s Board of Directors urges our fellow North Carolina nurses to come together as one in the face of tragedy. The American Nurses Association is spearheading a Call to Action and we hope you will be part of it. Both ANA and NCNA support a thorough, transparent investigation to ensure the truth is revealed.
