Statement from the North Carolina Nurses Association on Artificial Intelligence

December 16, 2025

Nurses stand at the intersection of compassion, clinical expertise, and rapidly evolving technology. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into nursing practice and the broader healthcare system, we recognize and embrace its potential to enhance patient care, improve efficiency, and support clinical decision-making.

Simultaneously, we call for transparency and education around the use of AI in healthcare so that nurses fully understand how these tools function, the data behind them, and the implications for patient outcomes. We believe that every nurse should be empowered to question, interpret, and critically evaluate AI-generated recommendations. Awareness is essential to safe, informed, and equitable care.

We also affirm that technology must never overshadow or replace the deeply human elements that define our profession: empathy, presence, advocacy, and ethical judgment. NCNA stands firmly behind the American Nurses Association Statement on the Ethical use of Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Practice. AI must support—not supplant—nurses who listen to patients, comfort families, and make holistic decisions that no algorithm can replicate. The role and title of “nurse” must in all cases continue to be clearly delineated, articulated and protected for the benefit of patient care.

NCNA will engage fully and proactively in the ongoing evolution of this statement, as we pledge to be a leader in shaping ethical utilization and policies governing use of AI in nursing practice in North Carolina and beyond.

Nursing will continue to evolve, but its essence must remain human. AI can and will assist us—but it cannot replace us.
